Parasol College

My spouse likes to change the titles of shows and names of stores to something funny- Giant Eagle becomes Big Bird, Winking Lizard is called Blinking Gecko, and don’t even get me started on the horrific updates to Ed Sheeran song lyrics! Knowing this, it should have come as no surprise to me when he asked me if I was enjoying season 2 of “Parasol College.”

I am a nerd. I believe I have established this a long time ago. Being a fan of My Chemical Romance and Gerard Way, it was a logical step to fall in love with the Umbrella Academy comic book series. When it premiered last year as a Netfix series, I was enamored. So much so, that I binged season 1 before I devoured season 2. I pulled a handful of the more meaningful quotes from the series and the inspiration that I draw from them.

I love you- Even if you can’t love yourself! -Klaus
You have people in your corner, whether you realize it or not. Self-love is essential but when that tank gets low surround yourself with individuals who love your authentic, messy, beautiful self.

One grows used to things, even if sometimes one shouldn’t. -Pogo
Pogo reminds us that it is not uncommon to accept patterns and behaviors that we shouldn’t. What are some of the behaviors that you have given others permission to express towards you by not addressing it? Where have you allowed boundary violations to happen repeatedly? Remember- what you allow is what will continue.

We didn’t choose this life. We’re just living in it. -Number 5
One does not necessarily choose the life that they are born into. Nor do we have a choice as to what happens to us during that life. What we do have control over is how we respond to what life throws at us. What are some of the tools that you use to manage yourself?

I need a hit of sucrose. I’m heading to the vending machine. -Hazel
EAT!!!!! While Hazel primarily lived on a diet of Agnes’ doughnuts, that might not be the best choice. However, we are most likely to react emotionally when we are hungry. Remind yourself to eat- even during difficult times. You have to give your brain calories in order for it to think straight.

The ties that bind you together make you stronger than you are alone. -Sir Reginald Hargreeves
You are not alone. You are strong on your own, you are stronger when you allow people into your life who build you up.
